The estrogen receptors (ER) were localized in 35% of cystadenomy in 67% of tumors of borderline malignancy and in 66% of carcinomas; also in 67% of sex cord-stromal tumors, in 29% of germ cell tumors and in 33% of metastatic tumors, while they were not detected at all in ovarian cysts. We conclude that ER-positive ovarian tumors, especially the richest in ER-content serous and undifferentiates carcinomas, are candidates for antiestrogen endocrine therapy, adjuvant to surgery and chemotherapy. Our method can detect ER in paraffin sections of ovarian tumors with precision, thus making possible both their retrospective examination and the simultaneous comparison of their histopathological features to their ER expression.","abstract_html":"We studied immunohistochemically the estrogen receptor expression in paraffin sections of 71 neoplasms and 6 non-neoplasmic cysts of the ovaries, using the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex (ABC) method and monoclonal anti-ER antibodies.
