IF THIS BRITTLE FAILURE IS AVOIDED, SAFETY AND RELIABILITY OF REINFORCED CONCRETE STRUCTURES UNDER A STRONG EARTHQUAKE CAN BE CONSIDERABLY IMPROVED. THE OBJECTIVE OF THE PRESENT INVESTIGATION IS FOURFOLD: A. TO STUDY THE EFFICIENCY AND DESCRIBE BASIC PROPERTIES OF REINFORCED CONCRETE B/C JOINTS WITH DIAGONAL REINFORCING BARS UNDER CYCLIC LOADING. B. THE SECOND AIM OF THIS STUDY IS TO COMPARE THE EFFICIENCY OF THE PROPOSED DIAGONAL REINFORCING PATTERN WITH THOSE OF OTHER NON CONVENTIONAL REINFORCING PATTERNS OFOTHER TYPES, SUCH AS STEEL FIBERS AND SEVERAL COMBINATIONS OF STEEL FIBERS, STIRRUPS AND HIGH STRENGTH CONCRETE. C. THE THIRD RESEARCH PURPOSE IS TO EXAMINE THE INFLUENCE OF THE Ρ-Δ EFFECT, THAT IS CAUSED BY THE SIMULTANEOUS CHANGE OF THE AXIAL COLUMN LOAD AND THE LATERAL DISPLACEMENT Δ IN THE REINFORCED CONCRETE B/C JOINTS. D. THE FOURTH PURPOSE OF THIS RESEARCH IS TO PRODUCE AN ANALYTICAL MODEL FOR THE DESIGN OF B/C JOINTS REINFORCED WITH CONVENTIONAL REINFORCEMENT AND WITH INCLINED DIAGONAL REINFORCEMENT. THE TESTS SHOWED THAT THE PROPOSED ARRANGEMENT OF CROSSED DIAGONAL BARS IS A SIMPLE, CHEAP AND EASILY APPLIED TECHNIQUE TO IMPROVE THE EARTHQUAKE RESISTANT MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF BEAM-COLUMN CONNECTIONS. ALSO B/C CONNECTIONS WITH DIAGONAL REINFORCEMENT PERFORMED CONSIDERABLY BETTER THAN THOSE WITH CONVENTIONAL REINFORCEMENT AND NON CONVENTIONAL REINFORCEMENT OF OTHER TYPES SUCH AS STEEL FIBERS OR HIGHER STRENGTH CONCRETE IN THEJOINT REGION. THE Ρ-Δ EFFECT, PRODUCED BY THE SIMULTANEOUS CHANGE OF LATERAL DISPLACEMENT AND AXIAL LOAD, IN COMBINATION WITH THE FLEXURAL STRENGTH RATIO (MR), THE JOINT SHEAR STRESSES (Γ) AND THE AMOUNT OF TRANSVERSE REINFORCEMENT (PT), ARE THE MAIN PARAMETERS WHICH INFLUENCE THE SEISMIC PERFORMANCE OF EXTERNAL REINFORCED CONCRETE B/C JOINTS. IN THE ANALYTICAL PART OF THE RESEARCH, THE DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW MODEL WAS ATTEMPTED. THE PROPOSED MODEL IS A SUPERPOSITION OF THREE MODELS. D. THE FOURTH PURPOSE OF THIS RESEARCH IS TO PRODUCE AN ANALYTICAL MODEL FOR THE DESIGN OF B/C JOINTS REINFORCED WITH CONVENTIONAL REINFORCEMENT AND WITH INCLINED DIAGONAL REINFORCEMENT. THE TESTS SHOWED THAT THE PROPOSED ARRANGEMENT OF CROSSED DIAGONAL BARS IS A SIMPLE, CHEAP AND EASILY APPLIED TECHNIQUE TO IMPROVE THE EARTHQUAKE RESISTANT MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF BEAM-COLUMN CONNECTIONS. ALSO B/C CONNECTIONS WITH DIAGONAL REINFORCEMENT PERFORMED CONSIDERABLY BETTER THAN THOSE WITH CONVENTIONAL REINFORCEMENT AND NON CONVENTIONAL REINFORCEMENT OF OTHER TYPES SUCH AS STEEL FIBERS OR HIGHER STRENGTH CONCRETE IN THEJOINT REGION. THE Ρ-Δ EFFECT, PRODUCED BY THE SIMULTANEOUS CHANGE OF LATERAL DISPLACEMENT AND AXIAL LOAD, IN COMBINATION WITH THE FLEXURAL STRENGTH RATIO (MR), THE JOINT SHEAR STRESSES (Γ) AND THE AMOUNT OF TRANSVERSE REINFORCEMENT (PT), ARE THE MAIN PARAMETERS WHICH INFLUENCE THE SEISMIC PERFORMANCE OF EXTERNAL REINFORCED CONCRETE B/C JOINTS. IN THE ANALYTICAL PART OF THE RESEARCH, THE DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW MODEL WAS ATTEMPTED. THE PROPOSED MODEL IS A SUPERPOSITION OF THREE MODELS.
