Abstract
dc:descriptionTHE RESEARCH WORK PRESENTED IN THIS THESIS CONCERNS THE STUDY IN DEPTH OF ALL PHYSICOCHEMICAL PHAENOMENA OBSERVED WHEN A PAINT LAYER IS ILLUMINATED BY A VISIBLE OR NEAR INFRARED ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION (380-2.500 NM). A NEW METHOD FOR CALCULATION OF THE SCATTERING AND ABSORPTION COEFFICIENTS (S.K), WHICH CHARACTERIZE THE PHYSICOCHEMICAL BEHAVIOUR OF PAINT LAYERS, IS PROPOSED. THIS METHOD ISBASED ON THE APPLICATION OF INFRARED REFLECTOGRAPHY IN COMBINATION WITH THE IMAGE PROCESSING TECHNIQUES USING A SPECIALLY DEVELOPED SYSTEM FOR ACQUIRING AND DIGITIZING THE OPTICAL RESULT OBTAINED BY THIS METHOD. THE USE OF IMAGE PROCESSING TECHNIQUES AIMING AT THE IMAGE QUALITY IMPROVEMENT AND AT THE EXTRACTION OFINFORMATION CLOSELY RELATED TO THE PAINT LAYER PHYSICOCHEMICAL BEHAVIOUR AND THE EXISTENCE OF OVERPAINTINGS OF OLDER OR RECENT INTERVENTIONS OR OF AN INITIALSKETCH, COMBINED WITH THE APPLICATION OF "DESTRUCTIVE" METHODS OF ANALYSIS TO 13 BYZANTINE AND POST BYZANTINE ICONS LED TO THE PROPOSITION OF A COMPLETE METHODOLOGY TO CONFRONT THE PROBLEM OF THE PHYSICOCHEMICAL BEHAVIOUR OF PAINT LAYERS AND THE CONSERVATION OF BYZANTINE AND POST BYZANTINE ICONS.
