The mortality rates from traffic accidents increase for both sexes until 1979. From 1979 until 1981 there is a minor decrease in the mortality rates from traffic accidents. After the 4th year of age males have greater mortality rates than females. The highest annual rates are at ages 20-24 and 65 over. Most of the young victims are male drivers and most of the elder victims are pedestrians. The increase of the index of the number of registered vehicles in Greece is greater than the increase of the index of the number of deaths from traffic accidents. Areas around large cities in Greece have greater mortality rates than rural ones. The greater area of Athens has the smallest mortality rate in Greece. Summer and weekends have the highest frequency in traffic fatalities. Drivers who are involved in traffic fatalities are mainly businessmen with amateur license and driving private cars. High speed of the cars and carelessness of the pedestrians are the main reasons for traffic accidents. Life expectancy is eliminated due to traffic fatalities in both sexes. The study of traffic accidents in Epirus reveals that in this part of Greece traffic fatalities follow the general model of the country.","abstract_html":"This study presents the evolution of traffic fatalities in Greece, during the period 1956-1982.
