dc:descriptionDetailed analyses of the growth phenomenon of the human spine and of individual changes which occur in it during juvenile and adolescent periods are of great significance to the study of this structure. This thesis attempts to determine trends in spine growth and in corresponding changes in the shape of the spine. In this cross-sectional study, we statistically analyze anthropometric parameters from standardized radiographs of the thoracic and lumbar spine of normal children. Our results indicate spine growth in a pattern similar to that of long bones. There appear, therefore, to be pre-adolescent and adolescent growth spurs for both sexes, with those of girls beginning at an earlier stage. This observation supports the theory that the growth plates of vertebral bodies are similar to the epiphyseal plates of long bones. The shape of the thoracic and lumbar spine was studied on the lateral profile due to the physiologic curvatures and angles of the spine. Kyphosis and lordosis were measured using Cobb's method and again using a new index which takes into consideration a more accurate geometry of the curves. Separate tables have been completed for every individual anthropometric parameter evaluated by sex and age. These tables may be used as guidelines for predicting normal growth, for assessing pathologic conditions, and for comparison with groups of subjects who have spinal disorders where physical growth is an important factor. Our results show a wide physiological latitude and scattering of individual values around the average. This is to be expected since other studies prove that there exists a great difference in the appearance of the normal body.
