SPECIMENS OF THE SEDIMENT DWELLING SHRIMP CALLIANASSA TYRRHENA WERE COLLECTED FROM CLEAN WATERS OF SOUTH EVOIKOS AND EXPOSED IN THE LABORATORY TO DIFFERENT CONCENTRATIONS OF THE HEAVY METALS CADMIUM (CD) AND MERCURY (HG) FOR VARIOUS TIME PERIODS. SINCE HEPOTOPANCREAS IS CONSIDERED AS THE MAJOR DETOXIFICATION ORGAN, EXTRACTS OF THIS TISSUE WERE MAINLY UTILISED IN THIS STUDY. THE EFFECT OF CADMIUM AND MERCURY ON GENERAL PROTEINS, GENERAL PEPTIDES, METAL BINDING PROTEINS AND ON THE ACTIVITY AND MOLECULAR FORMS OF THE ENZYMES GLUTATHIONE S-TRANFERASE, ALKALINE PHOSPHATASE AND ESTERASE WERE STUDIED. TECHNIQUES SUCH AS ELECTROPHORESIS, GEL FILTRATION, ENZYME ACTIVITY ASSAYS, ATOMIC ABSORPTION SPECTROPHOTOMETRY AND REVERSED PHASE HIGH PERFORMANCE LIQUID CHROMATOGRAPHY (RP-HPLC), WERE EMPLOYED. CADMIUM AND MERCURY ACCUMULATION WAS FOUND TO CAUSE SIGNIFICANT QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE CHANGES TO SOLUBLE PROTEIN COMPONENTS IN THE HEPATOPANCREAS OF THE SHRIMP OF C. TYRRENA. SOME OF THESE CHANGES APPEAR TO BE METAL-SPECIFIC WHILE OTHERS COMMON TO BOTH METALS. ΔΕΙΓΜΑΤΑ ΤΗΣ ΓΑΡΙΔΑΣ CALLIANASSA TYRRHENA ΠΟΥ ΖΕΙ ΣΕ ΙΖΗΜΑΤΑ, ΣΥΛΛΕΧΘΗΚΑΝ ΑΠΟ ΚΑΘΑΡΑ ΝΕΡΑ ΤΟΥ Ν. ΕΥΒΟΙΚΟΥ ΚΑΙ ΕΚΤΕΘΗΚΑΝ ΣΤΑ ΒΑΡΙΑ ΜΕΤΑΛΛΑ ΚΑΔΜΙΟ (CD) ΚΑΙ ΥΔΡΑΡΓΥΡΟ (HG) ΣΕ ΔΙΑΦΟΡΕΤΙΚΕΣ ΣΥΓΚΕΝΤΡΩΣΕΙΣ ΚΑΙ ΧΡΟΝΙΚΕΣ ΠΕΡΙΟΔΟΥΣ. ΚΑΘ' ΟΣΟΝ ΤΟ ΗΠΑΤΟΠΑΓΚΡΕΑΣ ΘΕΩΡΕΙΤΑΙ ΣΑΝ ΤΟ ΚΥΡΙΟ ΟΡΓΑΝΟ ΑΠΟΤΟΞΙΝΩΣΗΣ, ΕΚΧΥΛΙΣΜΑΤΑ ΤΟΥ ΙΣΤΟΥ ΑΥΤΟΥ ΧΡΗΣΙΜΟΠΟΙΗΘΗΚΑΝ ΣΤΗΝ ΠΑΡΟΥΣΑ ΕΡΓΑΣΙΑ. ΜΕΛΕΤΗΘΗΚΕ ΗΕΠΙΔΡΑΣΗ ΤΟΥ ΚΑΔΜΙΟΥ ΚΑΙ ΤΟΥ ΥΔΡΑΡΓΥΡΟΥ ΣΕ ΓΕΝΙΚΕΣ ΠΡΩΤΕΙΝΕΣ ΚΑΙ ΠΕΠΤΙΔΙΑ, ΣΕ ΜΕΤΑΛΛΟΔΕΣΜΕΥΤΙΚΕΣ ΠΡΩΤΕΙΝΕΣ ΚΑΙ ΣΤΗΝ ΔΡΑΣΤΙΚΟΤΗΤΑ ΚΑΙ ΤΙΣ ΜΟΡΙΑΚΕΣ ΜΟΡΦΕΣ ΤΩΝ ΕΝΖΥΜΩΝ S-ΤΡΑΝΣΦΕΡΑΣΗ ΤΗΣ ΓΛΟΥΤΑΘΕΙΟΝΗΣ, ΑΛΚΑΛΙΚΗ ΦΩΣΦΑΤΑΣΗ ΚΑΙ ΕΣΤΕΡΑΣΗ. ΧΡΗΣΙΜΟΠΟΙΗΘΗΚΑΝ ΤΕΧΝΙΚΕΣ ΗΛΕΚΤΡΟΦΟΡΗΣΗΣ, ΜΟΡΙΑΚΗΣ ΔΙΗΘΗΣΗΣ, ΔΟΚΙΜΑΣΙΕΣ ΕΝΖΥΜΙΚΗΣ ΔΡΑΣΤΙΚΟΤΗΤΑΣ, ΦΑΣΜΑΤΟΦΩΤΟΜΕΤΡΙΑ ΑΤΟΜΙΚΗΣ ΑΠΟΡΡΟΦΗΣΗΣ ΚΑΙ ΥΓΡΗ ΧΡΩΜΑΤΟΓΡΑΦΙΑ ΥΨΗΛΗΣ ΠΙΕΣΗΣ ΑΝΤΙΣΤΡΟΦΗΣ ΦΑΣΗΣ (RP-HPLC).
