THE EXCHANGE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PAIR POTASSIUM-MAGNESIUM WAS STUDIED IN THREE REPRESENTATIVE RED MEDITERRANEAN SOILS USING THERMODYNAMIC PRINCIPLES. THE EXCHANGE REACTION WAS STUDIED IN BOTH DIRECTIONS IN AN ATTEMPT TO INVESTIGATE ITS REVERSIBILITY AND TO RELATE IT WITH THE MINERALOGICAL COMPOSITION OF THE SOILS. COMPARISON OF THE EXPERIMENTAL ISOTHERMS TO THE NON-PREFERENCE ISOTHERMS REVEALED THAT ALL THREE SOILS EXHIBITED HIGH PREFERENCE FOR POTASSIUM RELATIVE TO MAGNESIUM IONS. THE VALUES OF THE THERMODYNAMIC PARAMETERS KEQ, ΔGO, ΔΗO, ΔSO FOR THE K_MG EXCHANGE, CALCULATED FROM THE EXPERIMENTAL EXCHANGE ISOTHERMS, CONFIRMED THE SOILS' PREFERENCE FOR POTASSIUM. THESE VALUES WERE INFLUENCED MAINLY BY THE TYPE OF CLAY MINERALS PREVAILING IN THE CLAY FRACTION OF THE SOILS STUDIED. THE EXCHANGE REACTION OF THE PAIR K-MG WAS NOT COMPLETELY REVERSIBLE BUT EXHIBITED HYSTERESIS, THE MAGNITUDE OF WHICH WAS MORE PRONOUNCED IN THOSE SOILS WHERE MICA-TYPE MINERALS DOMINATED THE CLAY FRACTION. HYSTERESIS EFFECTS WERE ATTRIBUTED TO THE COMBINED ACTION OF CLAY FLOCCULATION DURING THE EXCHANGE EXPERIMENTS AND TO CHANGES OCCURRING IN THE MICA-TYPE MINERALS UPON POTASSIUM DEPLETION.
