Abstract
dc:descriptionSTUDY OF THE NEAR-FIELD BEHAVIOUR OF A ROUND BUOYANT JET, DISCHARGING VERTICALLY UPWARDS IN A TWO-LAYER STABLY STRATIFIED AMBIENT. EXPERIMENTS WERE PERFORMED TO CONFIRM THE THEORETICAL RESULTS DEVELOPED IN THE ANALYSIS, WITH VARIOUS INITIAL CONDITIONS OF THE JET AND VARIOUS DEPTHS AND DENSITIES OF THE TWO LAYERS OFTHE AMBIENT. STUDY OF THE OBSERVED FLOW CASES AND THE ESTABLISHMENT OF WELL DEFINED QUANTITATIVE CRITERIA FOR FLOW CLASSIFICATION. A THEORETICAL ANALYSIS IS PERFORMED FOR THE UPFLOW REGION OF EACH TYPE OF FLOW SEPARATELY. FINALLY, THE HORIZONTAL SPREADING OF THE JET FLOW AROUND THE DENSITY INTERFACE IS STUDIED. THE SOLUTIONS WHICH RESULT FROM THE WHOLE THEORETICAL APPROACH, ARE HANDY AND QUITE ACCURATE, SO THEY CAN BE USED BOTH IN PRACTICAL DESIGN PROBLEMS AND IN FUTURE INVESTIGATIONS.
