dc:descriptionA QUANTITATIVE STUDY OF BOTH THE THERMAL AND MECHANICAL STATE OF THE LITHOSPHERE IN GREECE AND THEIR INTERRELATIONSHIP IN THE COURSE OF THE GEOLOGIC TIME. THEMAIN DATA USED ARE NEOTECTONIC ONES, ABSOLUTE VALUES OF THE EFFECTIVE PRINCIPAL STRESSES MEASURED THROUGH HYDROFRACTURING IN OIL WELLS, THE TECTONIC SUBSIDENCE OF NEOGENE SEDIMENTARY BASINS, TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENTS AND ESTIMATED HEAT FLOW, PALEOGEOTHERMAL INDICATORS, DEEP GEOPHYSICAL DATA RELATED TO THE CRUST STRUCTURE, RHEOLOGICAL MODELS FOR THE STRENGTH OF THE LITHOSPHERE. OFFSHORE AND WEST OF PARGA THE VERTICAL PRINCIPAL STRESS (ΣΝ) IS INTERMEDIATE BETWEEN ΣΗ AND ΣΗ, IN NW PELOPONNESE ΣΝ EXCEEDS ΣΗ WITH A SLIGHT DIFFERENCY ONLY, WHEREAS IT ISΣΝ>>ΣΗ>ΣΗ IN THE NORTH AEGEAN. A COMPRESSIVE TECTONIC STRESS OF ABOUT 10 MPA IS ESTIMATED FOR WESTERN GREECE, IN CONTRAST WITH AN EXTENSIVE STRESS OF ABOUT 3MPA IN THE NORTH AEGEAN. TECTONICS PROVINCES WERE DELINIATED IN CLOSE CORRESPONDENCE TO GEOTHERMAL PROVINCES. THE THERMAL STATE AND THE MECHANICAL STRENGTH OF THE AEGEAN LITHOSPHERE WAS STUDIED, AS WELL AS THE THERMAL HISTORY OF WESTERNGREECE. A THINNING FACTOR OF 1,4-1,5 IS ESTIMATED FOR THE NORTH AEGEAN CRUST AND 2,4-9,8 FOR THE MANTTLE. A MODEL OF SUBDUCTION OF THE AFRICAN LITHOSPHERE ISEXAMINED IN RELATIONSHIP TO THE ACTIVE STRESS FIELD, THE THERMAL STATE, THE MIGRATION OF VOLCANISM FROM THRACE TO THE PRESENT POSITION IN THE AEGEAN AND THE FORMATION OF NEOGENE BASINS AND TROUGHS.
