Abstract
dc:descriptionTHE IMPLEMENTED PACKET PROCESSING MODULE (PPM) FOR A LOCAL INTEGRATED OPTICAL NETWORK, WHICH PERFORMS THE FUNCTIONS OF THE LAYERS 2 UP TO 4 OF THE OSI MODEL, IS PRESENTED. THE PPM HANDLES THE HIGH SPEED INTERFACE TO THE ACCESS CONTROL MODULE OF THE NODE, THE REQUIRED BUFFER MANAGEMENT AND IT ALSO PERFORMS THE PACKET PROCESSING AT A RATE OF 300 PACKET/REC. THE USED ARCHITECTURE IS BASED ON A MULTIPROCESSOR TECHNIQUE FOR PERFORMANCE REASONS, USING 32-BIT PROCESSING UNITS.THE ARCHITECTURE IS BASED ON THE ELABORATED ANALYSIS AND SIMULATION OF THE NETWORK NODE PERFORMANCE WHICH LET OUT THE PROCESSING POWER OF THE PPM. THE NETWORK COMMUNICATION PROTOCOL IMPLEMENTATION IS INDEPENDENT OF THE HARDWARE/ SOFTWARE STRUCTURE OF PPM.
