ΣΥΜΒΟΛΗ ΣΤΗ ΜΕΛΕΤΗ ΤΗΣ ΠΑΛΑΙΟΠΑΝΙΔΑΣ ΤΩΝ ΜΕΓΑΛΩΝ ΣΠΟΝΔΥΛΩΤΩΝ (CARNIVORA, PERISSODACTYLA, ARTIODACTYLA) ΤΟΥ ΣΠΗΛΑΙΟΥ ΤΩΝ ΠΕΤΡΑΛΩΝΩΝ ΤΗΣ ΧΑΛΚΙΔΙΚΗΣ
Abstract
dc:descriptionABOUT 1.500 ANIMAL BONES AND BONE-FRAGMENTS FROM PETRALONA CAVE HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED AND ANALYSED. SKULLS, HORNS, TEETH AND POSTCRANIAL SKELETON FROM LARGE MAMMALS HAVE BEEN STUDIED TO THE PRESENT PAPER. THE STUDY OF THE FOLLOWING FAMILIES: URSIDAE, CANIDAE, HYAENIDAE, FELIDAE, EQUIDAE, RHINOCEROTIDAE, BOVIDAE, CERVIDAE AND SUIDAE SHOWED A NEW SPECIES: EQUUS PETRALONIENSIS N. SP. AND A SUBSPECIES NEW FOR GREECE: EQUUS CABALLUS PIVETEANI DAV . & PR. FURTHER STUDY OF CROCUTA SP. IS REQUIRED AS PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION SHOWS THAT MAY REPRESENT A NEWSPECIES. THE 21 DIFFERENT SPECIES STUDIED ARE DETERMINED TO BELONG TO TWO DIFFERENT FAUNAS WITH THE INCLUSION OF TRANSITIVE FORMS. THESE FAUNAS ARE OF THE EARLY MIDDLE AND UPPER PLEISTOCENE, MOSTLY ENDEMIC. THE FAUNAS WERE FOUND MIXED TOGETHER ON THE FLOOR OF THE CAVE AND THE MIXING IS BELIEVED DUE TO THE ACTION OF FLOWING WATER AS INDICATED BY ROUNDING AND ABRASION OF BONES, MANY ISOLATED TEETH AND SCATTERED SKELETONS. THE ABSENCE OF RECENT BONES SHOWS THAT THE CAVE CLOSED DURING THE UPPER PLEISTOCENE. THE MAJORITY OF THE FINDS BELONG TO HERBIVORES WHICH WERE THE MAIN FOOD OF CARNIVORES, THAT SOMETIMES INHABITATED THE CAVE. THE COPROLITHES AND THE JUVENILLE FINDS ALSO ESTABLISH THE INHABITATION. THE CLIMATE OF THE AREA DURING THIS PERIOD WAS RATHER WARM AND THE ENVIRONMENT STEPPE LIKE WHICH WAS INTERRUPTED BY FEW FORESTS.
