NINE DIFFERENT PAH WERE IDENTIFIED AND QUANTIFIED. THE RESULTS OF THESE DETERMINATIONS INDICATE THAT: (I) THE PAH CONCENTRATIONS WERE HIGHER IN THE CENTRAL AREA OF ATHENS CITY THAN IN THE INDUSTRIAL AREA (II) THE PAH CONCENTRATIONS IN THE ATMOSPHERE ARE LOWER IN SUMMER. THE HIGHERVALUES OF PAH WERE MEASURED DURING SUNDAYS. (IV) THE PAH CONCENTRATIONS WERE HIGHER DURING THE MORNING HOURS 9-11. (V) THE HIGHER PERCENTAGE OF PAH WAS ABSORBED ON PARTICLES WITH DIAMETER OF LESS THAN 3.3 MM. (VI) DURING WINTER THE MAINPOLLUTION SOURCE OF PAH IN THE CENTRAL AREA OF ATHENS WAS THE CENTRAL HEATING WHILE IN THE INDUSTRIAL AREA IT WAS INDUSTRY. DURING SUMMER THE MAIN SOURCE WASVEHICLES.
