Abstract
dc:descriptionIT WAS FOUND THAT CATALYTIC ACTIVITY AND SELECTIVITY OF METAL CATALYSTS USED FOR ETHYLENE OXIDATION CAN BE ALTERED DRAMATICALLY AND IN A REVERSIBLE MANNER. THIS IS ACCOMPLISHED BY ELECTROCHEMICALLY SUPPLYING OXYGEN ANIONS ONTO CATALYTIC SURFACES VIA POLARIZED SOLID ELECTROLYTE CELLS. OXYGEN ANIONS, FORCED ELECTROCHEMICALLY TO ADSORB ON THE CATALYST SURFACE, ALTER THE CATALYST WORK FUNCTION INA PREDICTABLE WAY AND LEAD TO REACTION RATE CHANGES UP TO THE ORDER OF 5000%. CHANGES IN CATALYTIC REACTION RATES CAN EXCEED THE RATE OF O2- TRANSPORT TO OR FROM THE CATALYST SURFACE UP TO A FACTOR OF 10 5. THE ACRONYM NEMCA (NON-FARADAIC ELECTROCHEMICAL MODIFICATION OF CATALYTIC ACTIVITY) WAS USED TO DESCRIBE THIS NEW PHENOMENON.
