Abstract
dc:descriptionTHE INCREASING CONCERN ABOUT ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION FROM SO2 HAS LED TO REQUIREMENTS FOR LOWER SULFUR CONTENT OF GASOILS AND RESIDUAL FUELS. IN THE BEGINNING, WE EXAMINED THE DESULFURIZATION AFTER THE EXTRACTION OF PETROLEUM DISTILLATESWITH AMIDIC SOLVENTS (DMF AND NMP) AND THE CHANGES IN THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE EXTRACTION PRODUCTS. FURTHERMORE, HYDROGEN PEROXIDE AND ACETIC ACID WERE USED FOR THE OXIDATION OF THE SULFUR COMPOUNDS OF PETROLEUM TO SULFONES (R-[S02]-R'). THE EXTRACTION OF THE OXIDIZED PRODUCTS WITH NMP AND DMF GAVE BETTER RESULTS THAN BEFORE BECAUSE OF THE INCREASED POLARITY OF THE SULFONES. WE ALSO FOUND THAT DESULFURIZATION WAS POSSIBLE BY USING SEVERAL POLAR EXTRACTION SOLVENTS SUCH AS METHANOL AND CARBOXYLIC ACIDS. ANOTHER DESULFURIZATION PROCESS WHICH WAS CARRIED OUT AS WELL, WAS BASED ON THE THERMAL PYROLYSIS OF THE OXIDIZED GASOILSAND PETROLEUM RESIDUES. DESULFURIZATION OCCURED BY THE DECOMPOSITION OF THE SULFONES TO HYDROCARBONS AND SULFUR DIOXIDE.
