OVERTOPPING IS BROUGHT ABOUT BY ADDING AN INITIAL DISCHARGE TO THE DAM'S RESERVOIR. THE DISCHARGE VARIATION WITH TIME DOWNSTREAM IS OBTAINED FOR VARIOUS VALUES OF THE INITIAL DISCHARGE. A MATHEMATICAL MODEL IS PROPOSED FOR THE PROGNOSIS OF THE BREAKING OF A DAM EMBANKMENT COMPOSEDOF NON COHESIVE, GRANULAR MATERIAL. THIS MODEL IS BASED ON THE BED LOAD FORMULA OF SHIELDS, ADAPTED TO THIS PHENOMENON.
