Abstract
dc:descriptionIN THIS THESIS, IRAKLION MARLS WHICH CONSTITUTE THE MAIN GEOLOGICAL FORMATION OF THEIR GEOLOGICAL ENVIROMENT IS DESCRIBED AND THEIR MINERALOGICAL COMPOSITION AND FABIRC ARE DETERMINED. FOR THE GEOTECHNICAL DESCRIPTION AND CLASSIFICATION OF THESE MARLS PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION AND PLASTICITY ARE EXAMINED. CONSEQUENTLY, SOME RESULTS FOR THEIR CLAY PARTICLES AGGREGATION AND THEIR ACTIVITY ARE PRESENTED AND SOME CORRELATIONS OF CALCIUM CARBONATE CONTENT WITH PLASTICITY AND CLAY CONTENT ARE DETERMINED . GEOMECHANICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THESE MARLS, SUCH AS RESISTANCE TO PENETRATION OF TERZAGHI SAMPLER, UNCONFINED AND TRIAXIAL COMPRESSIVE STRENGTHS, SENSITIVITY AND COMPRESSIBILITY ARE STUDIED AND THE RESULTS ARE COMPARED WITH OTHER FACTORS SUCH AS THE DEPTH OF SAMPLING AND DIAGENESISOF MARLS. SWELLING AND RESIDUAL STRENGTH CHARACTERISTICS ARE STUDIED IN MORE DETAIL AND SOME CORRELATIONS OF THESE WITH THE MINERAL COMPOSITION AND THE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES ARE GIVEN. FINALLY, THE ENGINEERING GEOLOGICAL UNITS OF IRAKLIONCITY, WHICH WERE MAPPED IN A SCALE 1 : 5.000, ARE DESCRIBED AND PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS OF THIS RESEARCH ARE DISCUSSED.
