Abstract
dc:descriptionThe aim of this study was to determine the extent of tooth loss among the population of Greece and the factors which contribute to it. A total of one thousand individuals was included in this study. This sample was subdivided in two groups. Sample 1, which consisted of 600 males, ages 18-5 0and Sample 2 which consisted of 400 individuals (200 males and 200 females), ages 18-24 .During the examination the following were recorded: 1) The number of teeth which had already been lost and the number of teeth which had to be extracted. 2) The dental disease which was responsible for tooth loss. 3) The age, the socioeconomic status, the oral hygiene habits and the dental care of the individual. It has been determined that: Sample 1 (males ages 18-50) 1) The average number of teeth which had been lost was 1,9 per individual. 2) The average number of teeth which had to be extracted was 1,8 per individual. 3) For the entire age group the percentages of teeth which had been lost due to caries, periodontal disease or other reasons were 56,5%, 10,8% and 32,8% respectively. However, periodontal disease was the main cause of tooth loss after the age of 40. 4) For the entire age group the percentages of teeth which had to be extracted due to caries, periodontal disease or other reasons were 68,7%, 12,3% and 19,0% respectively. Again periodontal disease was the main cause of tooth loss after the age of 40. 5) The mean number of extractions of individuals was inversely related to their oral hygiene habits and frequency of visits to their dentist. 6) Tooth loss was greater among the rural population than the urban population. 7) People of the higher socioeconomic class tend to have a lower number of extractions.8) The mean number of extractions was greater in the mandible (2,1) than in the maxilla (1,6). 9) The most frequent lost teeth were the first molars (2 4ß%). Sample 2 (males and females ages 18-24) 1) The average number of teeth which had been lost was 0,6 per individual. 2) The average mean number of teeth which had to be extracted was 0,4. 3) The mean number for teeth lost was greater for men (0,8) than for women (0,4). 4) The mean number of teeth which had to be extracted was also greater for men (0,7) than for women (0,1). 5) The percentage of tooth loss due to caries and other reasons was respectively 93,4% and 6,6%. 6) The total mean number of extractions was greater in the mandible (0,6) than in the maxilla (0,5). The most frequent lost teeth were the first molars (53,8%). 8) Tooth loss, both for men and women, was greater among the rural population. 9) Tooth loss was inversely related to the socioeconomic status of the individuals.10)The mean number of extractions of individuals was inversely related to their oral hygiene habitsand frequency of visits to their dentist. 11) Dental care was greater among women. It is concluded that undequete consideration should be given towards oral hygiene habits, dental knowledge and socioeconomic status of individuals when tooth loss is discussed.
