Abstract
dc:descriptionTHE SUBJECT OF THIS THESIS IS THE STUDY OF THE PLUTONIC ROCKS OF THE ELATIA AREA. THE ELATIA PLUTONITE IS SITUATED NORTH OF DRAMA NEAR THE GREEK-BULGARIAN BORDER-LINE. IT BELONGS TO THE RILA- RHODOPE MASSIF AND PART OF IT IS EXTENDED IN AND CONSISTS THE BARUTIN-BUYNOVO PLUTONITE. IT CONSISTS MAINLY OF MEDIUM TO CARSE GRAINED GRANODIORITE WHICH IN THE CENTRAL-WEST PART BECOMES PORPHYRITIC WITHLARGE MEGACRYSTS OF K-FELDSPAR. LESS ABUNDANT IS THE GRANITE WHICH IN THE FORMOF SMALL FINE TO MEDIUM GRAINED INTRUSIONS CUTS THE GRANODIORITE. THE MAIN ROCK-FORMING CONSTITUENTS ARE QUARTZ. K-FELDSPAR PLAGIOCLASE AND BIOTITE HORNBLENDE AND MUSCORITE APPEAR AT SUBORDINATE PROPORTIONS. ALLANITE EPIDOTE, SPHENE, APATITE, ZIRCON, CHLORITE AND OPAQUE MINERALS APPEAR AT ACCESSORY QUANTITIES. FORTHE GEOCHEMICAL STUDY OF THE ELATIA PLUTONIC ROCKS MAJOR (SI,TI,AL,FE,MG,CA, AND TRACE (RB,SR,BA,ZR,V,CR,SC,NB,NI,ZN,PB,U,TH,V,LA,CE,ND) ELEMENT CHEMICAL ANALYSES HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT. THE OVERALL CHEMICAL FEATURES OF THE ELATIA PLUTONITE SHOW THAT IT IS OF CALC-ALKALINE CHARACTER. USING THE WHOLE-ROCK RB-SR ISOCHRON METHOD AN AGE OF 86,7+27,0 M.A.-MIDDLE CRETACEOUS(?)-AND AN INITIAL 87SR/86SR RATIO OF 0,7060+0.0002 HAVE BEEN DEFINED. FROM ESTIMATES IN THE SYSTEM Q-OR-AB-AN-H2O A CONFINING PRESSURE OF ABOUT 6 KB FOR THE CRYSTALLIZATION ROCKS (SENSU STRICTO) OF ELATIA HAS BEEN INFERRED . THE ELATIA PLUTONITE IS I-TYPE AND WAS GENERATED IN A SUBDUCTION ZONE ENVIRONMENT. THE RELATIVELY LOW INITIAL 87SR/86SR RATIO OF 0.706 COMBINED WITH THE ABOVE DATA IS COMPATIBLE ORIGIN OF THE PARENTAL MAGMA OF THE ELATIA PLUTONITE FROM AN UPPER MANTLE SOURCE WITH SUBSEQUENT EXCHANGE WITH CRUSTAL STRONTIUM DURING ASCENT AND EMPLACEMENT. THE AGE OF THEPLUTONITE SUPPORTED BY A SIMILAR AGE IN SW BULGARIA INDICATES A MIDDLE CRETACEOUS(?) MAGMATISM IN THE REGION. THIS MAGMATISM IS PROBABLY RELATED TO THE SUBDUCTION OF THE PALEO-TETHYS (VARDAR ZONE) OCEANIC CRUST BENEATH THE SERBOMACEDONIAN AND RHODOPE MASSIFS WHICH TOOK PLACE IN UPPER JURASSIC-LOWER CRETACEOUS.
