A REVERTANT NON MUCOID VARIANT (RNMV) FROM THE PARENTAL MS WAS OBTAINED BY SERIAL PASSAGE ON TRYPTICASE SOY AGAR. THE EXTRACELLULAR MATERIAL (SLIME) FROM BOTH STRAINS WAS EXTRACTED BY METHODS AS FOR THE EXTRACTION OF GLYCOLIPOPROTEIN (GLP). GROSS CHEMICAL ANALYSES OF THE MS'S AND RNMV'S SLIME FOR URONIC ACIDS, CARBOHYDRATES, PROTEINS AND LIPIDS WERE 65%, 5.5%, 1.0%, 0.9% AND 16%, 48%, 11% AND 2% OF DRY WEIGHT, RESPECTIVELY. ANTIBODIES TO THE EXTRACELLULAR MATERIAL OF BOTH STRAINS WERE RAISED IN NEW ZEALAND WHITE RABBITS AND CROSS REACTIVITY IN HIGH TITERS AMONG THEM WAS SHOWN BY PASSIVE HEMAGGLUTINATION. ALSO, IT WAS SHOWN THAT THE EXTRACELLULAR MATERIAL OF THE RNMV EXERTED MITOGENIC ACTIVITY ON HUMAN PERIPHERAL LYMPHOCYTES WHILE THE MS'S EXTRACELLULAR MATERIAL WAS NOT MITOGENIC. THE MAJOR COMPONENT OF THE MS'S SLIME WAS ISOLATED BY ION EXCHANGE CHROMATOGRAPHY (IEC) AND GEL FILTRATION.
