Abstract
dc:descriptionThis research was aimed at developing a method for a two - dimentional computer aided head film analysis, which will be used to diagnose and study the Craniofacial System. The algorithm allows the possipility of using this method to study the Craniofacial or Gnathofacial System or any other part of the human body which can be represented twodimentionally on an X-ray film or photograph. The philosophy of the method lies in the fact that the data input are in the form of coordinates and the results in the output are variables and patterns which are within the possipilities of descriptive analyses. The variables are composed of simple and flat geometrical forms and are used for the measurement study, while the patterns are used for the morphological description of the part to be studied when applying the method. Concerning the mathematical syperimposition (simple or multiple) care has been taken that the selection of the stable cephalometric point and the orientation plane of the patterns be done by the research worker or user of the method. The possibility of the multiple use of the method is achived by minor variations in the programs of application. The set of the programs that have been written constitute a packet of computer application programs on cephalometry and are suitable to support a research section which will study the Craniofacial System. The basic steps of the methods of application are the direct and indirect digitization, the average of coordinates, the redigitization, the measurement process of the data and the output of the results in the form of variables and patterns. The statistical evaluation of the credibility of the method and the accurancy of its results showed that the real values of the variables are not affected in any of the basic steps of its application. The computer system used, as well as the logical programs written for the application of the method were simply tools for a close inquiry into the Cephalometry and for determining the perspectives provided for a further study of the Craniofasial System. Therefore, the contribution of this thesis lies in the following: a) Cephalometry has been considered from the point of view of Cybernetics, and classified into one of the basic Cybernetic Systems, which is the Black Box. A classification factor was the information given concerning the function of the Craniofacial System. b) A procedure is proposed for the study of Craniofacial Subsystems, according to the principles of study q/* Cyberentic Systems.c) The procedure required for a Cephalometric Analysis has been explained in mathematical terms and the parameters which are studied have been determined as well as the causes defining them.d) New Greek Terms have been coined for Orthodontics, necessary for communication among scientists who will use modern technological tools for Cephalometric Analyses. The proposed method, documented in this thesis, was applied to a sample set of lateral X - rays with class II, division 1 skeletal abnormaliti and norms. From the statistical evaluation and comparison of the data we arrived at the following conclusions: a) The mandible is shorter than the maxilla with clockwise direction. b) The maxilla and the frontal cranial base have a counter clockwise direction.c) The alveolar processes are higher than in the norms. d) The distance between Nasion and Articulare is larger than in the norms.
