Abstract
dc:descriptionTHE 553 PUBLIC WATER SUPPLY SYSTEMS SURVEYED, SERVED 3.373.234 PERSONS (34,6% OF THE NATIONAL TOTAL POPULATION). THE GREEK POPULATION HAD THEIR OWN WATER FROM THE DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM IN 96,3%, BUT 36% OF THE WATER UTILITIES HAD INTERMMITENT WATER SUPPLY. THE STANDARDS OF DISINFECTION MET 85% OF WATER SUPPLIES BUT DISINFECTION WAS OF POOR QUALITY AND THE RESIDUAL CHLORINE CONCENTRATION TEST WAS PERFORMED DAILY IN 25,8% OF WATER UTILITIES. THE SOURCES OF WATER HAD ADEQUATE SANITARY PROTECTION IN 30,8% OF WATER SUPPLIES. FROM THE BACTERIOLOGICAL EXAMINATION, IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT 70% OF THE SAMPLES FROM DUG WELLS, 63%OF SAMPLES FROM SPRINGS, 52% FROM RESERVOIRS, 18% FROM DRILLED WELLS AND 19,2% FROM THE DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM DID NOT MEET THE BACTERIOLOGICAL STANDARDS.
