Μεταβολές στην αναερόβιο βακτηριδιακή χλωρίδα του κόλπου σε γυναίκες που υποβλήθηκαν σε υστερεκτομή

This investigation was undertaken at the gynaecological department in Sunderland general hospital under the supervision of one of my Consultants. Professor S. Green who is the head officer of the Department of the Microbiology has supervised the culture and the identification of the bacteria. Professor J. Papavasiliou has finally supervised the writing of this investigation for my M.D. thesis and has given me valuable instructions and advice. One hundred and fifty vaginal specimens taken from fifty patients were cultured under anaerobic and aerobic conditions. There was a definite increase in anaerobic bacteria postoperatively and Bacteroides were more frequently isolated. This was probably due to the presence of necrotic tissue in the vagina as well to the accumulation of blood. These two factors can cause low Oxidation reduction potential (Eh) and lack of oxygen in the damaged tissues. It appears that both factors are necessary for the multiplication of the anaerobes. Postoperative complications were developed in 9 (nine) patients (31,9%) after abdominal hysterectomy and in 14 (fourteen) patients (63,3%) after vaginal hysterectomy. Twelve patients had urinary tract infection. This complication was more frequent (36,3%) after vaginal hysterectomy. This high proportion was due to frequent bladder drain by catheter for three or more days postoperatively. Finally the use of antibiotics pre and post operatively would be used in special cases and not as a routine as the administration of antibiotics in order to reduce the number of the bacteria in the vaginal as intestinal flora can be accomplished, by the patients defence system.
