ΕΠΙΠΕΔΑ ΜΟΛΥΒΔΟΥ ΑΙΜΑΤΟΣ ΚΑΙ ΝΕΦΡΙΚΗ ΛΕΙΤΟΥΡΓΙΑ ΠΑΙΔΙΩΝ ΜΙΑΣ ΠΕΡΙΟΧΗΣ ΜΕ ΑΥΞΗΜΕΝΟ ΠΕΡΙΒΑΛΛΟΝΤΙΚΟ ΜΟΛΥΒΔΟ

IN 51 CHILDREN AGED 1.5 - 8 YEARS LIVING WITHIN 1.5 KM OF THE LEAD (PB) SMELTERIN LAVRION, GREECE THE BLOOD LEAD (PBB) LEVELS RANGED FROM 9-63.2 MG/100ML (MO 36+-15.6) WHEREAS 31 CHILDREN OF THE SAME AGE FROM AN UNPOLLUTED AREA HAD PBB LEVELS 4.9-26.9 MG/100ML (MO 12.6+-5.7). OF THE LAVRION CHILDREN 51% HAD PBB > 35 MG/100ML. THE CHILDREN LIVING < 500M FROM THE PB SMELTER HAD HIGHER LEVELS THAN THOSE LIVING 500-1500M FROM THE SMELTER AND THE MEAN PBB LEVEL OF THECHILDREN OF PB WORKERS WAS HIGHER THAN THAT OF THE OTHER CHILDREN. THE LAVRION CHILDREN HAD LEVELS OF ERYTHROCYTE PROTOPORPHYRIN (EP) BETWEEN 10 AND 230 MG/100ML (MO 90.4+-65.9) A CLOSE CORRELATION WAS OBSERVED BETWEEN PBB AND EP (R=0.871). A GROUP OF 16 LAVRION CHILDREN WITH A HIGH PB BODY BURDEN (PBB > 40 MG/100ML OR PBB > 35 MG/100ML PLUS ER > 100 MG/100ML) SHOWED NO DIFFERENCES IN RENAL HANDLING OF PHOSPHOROUS FROM 16 LAVRION CHILDREN WITH A LOW PB BURDEN. HALF OF THE CHILDREN OLDER THAN 6 YEARS WITH THE HIGHEST BODY PB BURDEN SHOWED PATHOLOGICAL NET BONE CALCIUM RESORPTION. IN CONCLUSION, CHILDREN OF 1 1/2 -8YEARS LIVING NEAR A PB SMELTER HAD BURDEN, WITH EVIDENCE OF TOXICITY TO HAEMATOPOIESIS BUT NON OF RENAL TUBULAR DAMAGE.
