THE LIPID METABOLISM WAS STUDIED DURING THE FIRST TWELVE DAY GROWTH OF CITRULLUS LANATUS SEEDLINGS. THE DRY WEIGHT, THE AMOUNT OF TOTAL LIPIDS AND THE FATTYACID COMPOSITION OF THE DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE SEEDLING (COTELYDONS, AXIS) WERE DETERMINED DURING THIS PERIOD. THE CHANGES IN THE AMOUNT OF THE DIFFERENT LIPID CLASSES AND THEIR FATTY ACID COMPOSITION WERE ALSO DETERMINED. THE MOBILIZATION OF STORAGE LIPIDS IN THE COTYLEDONS WAS A LATE EVENT. ALL THE FATTY ACIDS OF THESE LIPIDS WERE METABOLIZED WITH THE SAME RATE. THE DRY SEEDS CONTAINED PHOSPHOLIPIDS. THE INHIBITION OF THE SEEDS CAUSED THE CATABOLISM OF THESE MOLECULES IN THE COTYLEDONS, WHILE FROM THE SECOND UP TO THE FIFTH DAY NEW POLAR LIPIDS WERE SYNTHESIZED. AFTER THE FIFTH DAY THE METABOLIC ACTIVITIES OF THECOTYLEDONS WERE REDUCED. THE AXIS USED ITS OWN STORAGE MATERIAL DURING THE FIRST DAYS OF GROWTH. BETWEEN THE DAYS 4 TO 7 THE AXIS WAS GROWN RAPIDLY. DURINGTHE SAME PERIOD POLAR LIPIDS WERE SYNTHESIZED. AFTER THE 7TH DAY THE METABOLIC ACTIVITIES OF THE AXIS WERE REDUCED.
