AN INVESTIGATION OF THE INTRINSIC KINETICS OF THE HDS OF ATMOSPHERIC RESIDUE OBTAINED FROM GREEK CRUDE OIL (THASSOS) CARRIED OUT WHILE AT THE SAME TIME CATALYST DEACTIVATION PHENOMENA WERE QUANTIFIED. A LABORATORY CHEMICAL REACTOR EQUIPPED WITH FOUR CATALYST BASKETS AND OF TOTAL INTERNAL VOLUME OF 890 CM3 WAS USED IN THE INVESTIGATION. AT BASKET RETATION RATES ABOVE 2500 RPM THE HDS RATEPROVED TO INDEPENDENT OF EXTERNAL TRANSPORT PHENOMENA OF THE REACTING CHEMICAL SPECIES. TWO TYPES OF COMMERCIAL CATALYST (HT-400 E. HARSHAW CHEMICAL COMPANY) AND (ICI 41-6, IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES) WERE EMPLOYED. EXPERIMENTAL DEACTIVATION CURVES (RELATIVE ACTIVITY VERSUS CATALYST OPERATING TIME), CURVES OF COKE AND METAL (V, NI) DEPOSITS WITH RESPECT TO OPERATING TIME. THE NITROGEN ADSORPTION-CAPILLARY CONDENSATION AND THE MERCURY DOROSIMETRY TECHNIQUES WERE APPLIED TO DETERMINE PORE VOLUME DISTRIBUTIONS AND SPECIFIC SURFACE AREAS OFCATALYST SAMPLES BEFORE AND AFTER USE AS WELL AS AFTER CATALYST REGENERATION. C/H RATIOS AND N2 CONTENT OF THE COKE DEPOSIT WERE ALSO DETERMINED.
