THE SYMMETRICAL NON-POLAR MOLECULES, SUCH AS CO2, AS INDIVIDUAL MOLECULES DO NOT ABSORB THE MICROWAVE ENERGY. BUT THE TRANSIENT DIPOLES FORMED DURING THE MOLECULAR COLLISIONS HAVE A CHARACTERISTIC ABSORPTION SPECTRUM WITH AN ASSOCIATED ABSORPTION COEFFICIENT SEVERAL ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE LESS THAN THE ORDINARY SPECTRA. THE MEASUREMENT OF COLLISION INDUCED ABSORPTION AT LOW MICROWAVE FREQUENCIESALTHOUGH INVOLVES SEVERAL EXPERIMENTAL DIFFICULTIES, IS SIGNIFICANT FOR THE THEORETICAL EXPLANATION OF SUCH PHENOMENA AS WELL AS FOR PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS. IN THIS WORK WE STUDY THE COLLISION INDUCED ABSORPTION OF CO2 AT LOW MICROWAVE FREQUENCIES IN A WIDE RANGE OF CONDITIONS. THE EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS WE SETTEDUP FOR THIS STUDY IS BASED ON THE CLASSICAL CAVITY METHOD FOR THE MEASUREMENT OF DIELECTRIC LOSSES IN GASES. THE PRIMARY MODIFICATIONS WE PERFORMED ON THIS CLASSICAL METHOD TO OBTAIN THE NECESSARY SENSITIVITY AND RESOLUTION REGARDED THEFINE TUNNING CIRCUIT OF THE MICROWAVE GENERATOR AND THE USE OF AN INDIRECT METHOD FOR THE ACCURATE MEASUREMENT OF THE QUALITY FACTOR Q OF THE CAVITY. THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE TWO CAVITIES AT 6.5 AND 14.8 GHZ WAS BASED ON AN ALGORITHM WE DEVELOPED FOR PLOTTING MODIFIED MODE CHARTS. THE ANALYSIS OF THE MEASUREMENTS OF COLLISION INDUCED ABSORPTION OF CO2 IN A WIDE REGION OF PRESSURES AND TEMPERATURES AT 2.7, 6.5 AND 14.8 GHZ LEADS TO A UNIQUE RELATION FOR THE ABSORPTION COEFFICIENT AS A FUNCTION OF F,P AND T FOR ALL THE EXPERIMENTAL CONDITIONS STUDIED. THE RESULTS PROVIDE INFORMATION FOR BINARY AND TRIPLE MOLECULAR COLLISIONS AND ALLOW CALCULATION OF THE ASSOCIATED RELAXATION TIMES AND THE ZEROTH MOMENT OF THE SPECTRUM . THE CORRELATION OF THE EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS WITH THE AVAILABLETHEORETICAL MODELS FOR THE COLLISION INDUCED ABSORPTION ALLOWS A SYSTEMATIC TEST OF THESE MODELS. AN IMPORTANT APPLICATION OF THIS WORK IS THE CALCULATION OFTHE ELECTRIC MOLECULAR QUADRAPOLE MOMENT OF CO2.
