Motivating Factors Of Mid-level College Administrators

This case study of mid-level college administrators at George Mason University explores the motivating factors that influence their decision to stay in higher education for over 10 years. This study used a purposeful sample of twelve participants. The three criteria to select participants were: 1) length of service must be at least ten years; 2) expertise must be in student affairs area and 3) must have a master's degree. Data collected were based on individual interviews, which were transcribed, analyzed and coded. The findings indicated that these administrators were motivated through direct contact with students, job satisfaction and career advancement.
