How might artificial intelligence in U.S. higher education shape internationalization practices? The study is guided by Everett Rogers’ Diffusion of Innovation theory. Grounded in generic qualitative methodology, I interviewed 11 senior international officers (SIOs) and senior administrators in international higher education affiliated with U.S. higher education institutions to explore their perceptions, strategies and challenges associated with AI integration and adoption. The findings are categorized into three broad perspectives (individual, institutional, and global context), highlighting AI adoption strategies, challenges and barriers to AI integration, the need for AI literacy and training, ethical considerations and data privacy, institutional attitudes towards AI impact AI adoption, and specific AI technologies and tools widely adopted on-campus. The findings underscored the transformative potential of AI in higher education internationalization for developing comprehensive strategies for AI integration, enhancing training programs, addressing ethical considerations, and fostering universal governance frameworks for effective global collaboration. This dissertation contributes to the significant research of artificial intelligence in higher education internationalization by providing insights, experiences, and perspectives from senior administrators leading campus internationalization at U.S. higher education institutions.
