Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2), a very small, circular, single-stranded DNA virus, is the major etiologic agent of porcine circovirus-associated diseases (PCVADs) and is widely prevalent in swine herds. It causes significant economic losses to the global pig industry. Three major PCV2 genotypes (PCV2a, PCV2b and PCV2d) have been identified around the world. Among the PCVADs, the most prominent disease associated with PCV2 is post-weaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS). PMWS severity varies by host breed; notably, Landrace and Large White pigs exhibit more severe clinical manifestations than Piétrain pigs. Pathologic features of PMWS in wasted pigs include elevated viral loads, progressive lymphocyte depletion, and monocyte infiltration in the lymph nodes, which critically impairs the immune system and often leads to fatal outcomes.
