Protection of synchronous generators and induction generators
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThe objective of this research is to develop a novel protective function, which is named EBP (dynamic state Estimation Based Protection) that can protect the synchronous generators and induction generators securely and dependably when they have internal faults. Specifically, the EBP function monitors the consistency between the generator measurements and the generator dynamic model via dynamic state estimation. Any mismatch between the measurements and the model indicates generator internal abnormalities and the EBP function would trip the generator when the internal fault occurs. Compared to legacy machine protective functions, the proposed EBP requires very few settings and no coordination with other relays, which greatly reduces the possibility of relay mis-operations caused by the wrong setting and coordination complexity. In addition, the proposed dynamic state estimation based protection scheme is implemented in an object-oriented way so that it can be easily applied to all kinds of generators. Furthermore, a generator parameter estimation algorithm is proposed which utilizes the state estimation to estimate the generator actual parameters. The generator model with accurate parameters then can be used in generator protection and many other applications.
