Recognition in burying beetles (Nicrophorus spp., Silphidae, Coleoptera)

Burying beetles (Nicrophorus spp.) meet potential partners on carcasses. The aim of this study was to determine how males and females are able to determine potential partners from individuals of different species. The cuticular hydrocarbons of various species of European and Canadian burying beetles were identified and quantified. Patterns of hydrocarbons were found to be species-specific. Statistical analyses were carried out to determine which hydrocarbons differed the most in males and females of a species. Behavioural experiments were performed using N. vespilloides to determine if one or more of these chemicals were used by the individuals themselves for identification.
