Single Electron Tunneling at Large Conductance

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

In this dissertation I study electron tunneling in nanofabricated metallic structures. Specifically I consider systems containing metallic tunnel junctions that consist of two metallic electrodes separated by a thin oxide layer. Electrons in the leads are described by Fermi liquid theory and considered as free quasiparticles where the charge is screened and Coulomb energy is included implicitly in the dispersion relation. During the tunnel process, however, the Coulomb energy is treated exactly leading to Coulomb blockade phenomena. In order to describe these phenomena I use mainly three approaches depending on the parameter range of applicability. First, a diagrammatic expansion in the tunneling conductance is employed to describe the range of weak to moderate tunneling. Then, a formally exact path integral expression is used to determine the linear conductance in the semiclassical regime for various systems. Finally, I performed numerical Monte Carlo simulations to cover the whole parameter space relevant experimentally.
