The Palazzo Calderini, the City of Imola and the Calderini Dynasty between the 14th and 20th century

The purpose of this thesis is to research a Renaissance-era palace in Imola, Italy, within the context of the surrounding city, through a combination of historical, archaeological, geographical and the topographical approaches. To start off, this research involves the study of cartography, whereby 5 separate historic maps have been analysed, scrutinised and evaluated in depth regarding the city of Imola from the following centuries: 1673, 1705, 1846, 1924 and 2017. This research paper initially highlights the historiography of Italian Renaissance era palaces within the city of Florence due to the abundance of available historic palaces and most importantly due to the large; available literature pertaining to the study of Renaissance Florentine noble families and that of their respective palaces. In this paper alone, a total of 5 separate palaces, that is: the Palazzo Strozzi, Palazzo Rucellai, Palazzo Pitti and the Palazzo Medici Riccardi and the most crucial one the Palazzo Calderini of Imola city have been studied. The highlight of this paper alone remains the Palazzo Calderini of Imola city as it has been at the forefront of this academic research project since the inception of all research endeavours. A standard, standing building survey involving both archaeological and architectural research has been conducted on the premises of the Palazzo Calderini as one of the core research efforts for this project. In addition, the core research method behind this project has primarily been via a desktop-based assessment involving several different cross-disciplines, such as architectural studies, archaeology and geographical studies, as some key examples.<p></p>
