Epidemiology of depressive symptoms in the Peruvian population before and during COVID-19
Abstract
dc:descriptionThe COVID-19 pandemic has increased the global prevalence of several mental health problems, including depressive symptoms. The increase in the prevalence of mental health problems was greatest in low- and middle-income countries. Moreover, in these countries, public health systems collapsed during the pandemic, as was the case in Peru. This thesis aims to improve the understanding of the epidemiology of depressive symptoms before and during the pandemic at the population level in Peru and to develop a framework for digital interventions to reduce depressive symptoms. This framework seeks to be an alternative that can help implement digital interventions in low and middle-income countries. This thesis contributes to a better understanding of the epidemiology of depressive symptoms in Peru through the population-based validation of the PHQ-9 and the analysis of trends in prevalence and access to treatment before and during the pandemic. Likewise, the thesis identified three profiles of depressive symptomatology based on severity and analysed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Peruvian mental health system, highlighting the role of teleconsultations in service recovery and informing a framework for the implementation of synchronous digital mental health interventions. The findings and strategies proposed in this thesis provide a basis for the development of public policies and national strategies aimed at improving the mental health of the Peruvian population, facilitating a more effective and resilient response to future health crises.
