Make Love to Your Mind: Dance, Disco and American Liberalism, 1970-1988

This thesis investigates American disco, 1970-1988, and argues that this history can give us an insight into how radically liberal values have spread into mainstream thinking through popular culture. Whilst disco’s embrace of racial and sexual diversity was once rebellious, and of the artistic fringes, these views can now seem as though they have always been common sense. Disco’s past is one example of how the idea of tolerance has been historically contested, as we must not forget it still is. This thesis explores that history through archival histories and oral history interviews with those who participated in hippie, disco and dance cultures.<p></p>
