The Painted Box

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

My thesis project, which is a seventy page novel excerpt entitled The Painted Box, is by in large an experiment in the use of narrative point of view as a means of character development. In addition to shifting between first- and third-person points of view, the novel also employs the use of epistolary elements and manipulation of psychic distance as character-development tools. The effect of intertwining multiple points of view is to provide the reader with a split impression of the protagonist, creating one world in which the reader views the protagonist within the confines of her own personal perceptions and another where the protagonist's actions contradict her perceptions about herself. This discrepancy in perception and action forms a conflict within the novel, and only through resolving this discrepancy can the protagonist achieve moral growth.
