It compares and contrasts the representation of women under the New Order Regime (1966-1998) and the Reformasi (reformation) period (1998-1999) through an analysis of the content of Kartini and Femina, between 1992 and 1998. It seeks to understand how changes in the representation of women are specifically related to the social, economic, and political changes in Indonesia. Moreover, by analysing the cultural production of a particular popular media [women’s magazines], this study examines the explicit characteristics of Indonesian women that have been identified as “modern” in the transformation era of Indonesia.","abstract_html":"This thesis analyses the representation of women in two women’s magazines in Indonesia.
