Curriculum change and the importance of teachers' beliefs and professional development : a case study of the higher colleges of technology in the United Arab Emirates

Computer technology has entered the classroom so that the current generation of college students is using computer tcchnologics as a learning tool with increasing ease and confidence across all subject areas. In order to engage these students, 'basic' information and communication technology knowledge and skills are now required by all teaching staff within higher education institutions. Many educational authorities have recognized the need for computer literate teachers and have published documents listing preferred or recommended skills in information and communication technologies. Meanwhile, research exploring the influences of computer technology upon teaching and learning has highlighted the continued need for a professional development curriculum that will engage teachers to effectively integrate these technologies into thc c1assroom.
