An investigation into information security in general medical practice
Abstract
dc:descriptionIncreased demand by governments and patients for better healthcare communication has seen a growth in adoption of electronic medical records, with general practice as the cornerstone of this distributed environment. In this progressively more electronic state, general practice is charged with the responsibility to ensure confidentiality and privacy of patient infonnation. However, evidence suggests that protection of patient information is poorly handled in general practice. The deficiency in awareness of vulnerability and risk, together with the lack of appropriate controls and knowledge, leaves medical practice insecure and potentially vulnerable to information security breaches.
