Following completion of a bout of exercise in the heat, cold water immersion (CWI) is sometimes used by athletes to rapidly decrease their core temperature, and may facilitate recovery. Few studies however, have examined the effects of CWI after exercise in the heat on short term recovery. In addition, whether or not performance benefits can arise from this recovery modality is equivocal. This thesis incorporates four individual studies surrounding the area of CWI recovery and one study that ,examined the reliability of a measure used to estimate blood flow.
