The headless angel of chance

Abstract

dc:description

This submission for a PhD in Writing comprises a novel, ‘The Headless Angel of Chance’ and an accompanying essay, ‘Reflections on the Headless Lady.’ The genesis of my research project lies in the true-life discovery of a ship's figurehead - a headless carving of a woman in flowing robes - on subantarctic Macquarie Island in 1973. Washed ashore in bay where there had been no known shipwrecks, successive parties of men from the Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition (ANARE) engaged in a series of epic missions to salvage the figurehead
