This study investigated the effects of three conditions; a single bout of cardiorespiratory exercise, a single bout of resistance exercise, and a no-exercise control. Participants were recruited from local inpatient residential treatment facilities. Participant age ranged from 26-46 years old. Participants were randomly assigned to conditions, completing each of the 3 conditions. Abbreviated profile of mood states (APOMS) and Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS) questionnaires were administered for pre- and post-intervention for each session. RMANOVAs indicated a significant interaction between time and condition for TMD (F(1, 2) = 9.32, p < 0.05) and PA (F(1, 2) = 9.505, p < 0.05). Nonparametric tests were used for the non-normally distributed NA scores. Friedman’s test revealed a significant difference from pre- to post-NA scores between conditions (χ2 = 31.550, p = 0.001).
