Practical recommendations for composition instructors based on a review of the literature surrounding ESL and identity

<p>As more multilingual students begin to enter mainstream composition courses, the need for training composition instructors in techniques for helping these students increases. Many instructors feel they lack adequate training. In addition, while linguistic issues do arise for multilingual students, addressing the issues surrounding student identity and their relationship to culture may prove more urgent in many composition classrooms. This thesis examines the literature surrounding the topics of culture, identity, and related factors as they apply to multilingual writers in the composition class. It then offers recommendations for composition instructors on topics they may consider in their multilingual classrooms.</p>
