An evidence-based faculty development program for dental hygiene clinical instructors

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

"Purpose: The intent of this research was to determine if an evidence-based faculty development program (EB FDP) improves dental hygiene clinical instructors' perceived self-efficacy in clinical teaching. Methods: This mixed methods study utilized the Teachers' Sense of Efficacy Scale (TSES) to gather data regarding clinical instructors' perceived self-efficacy. Permission from the creator was obtained. The TSES was used for a pretest and two posttests, one immediately following the implementation of the EB FDP, and the second at the end of the10 week quarter after clinical instructors had the opportunity to practice the teaching techniques they learned. A qualitative aspect was also utilized in the form of two 90 minute focus group sessions. Adding a qualitative element gave insight relating to the outcomes of the techniques clinical instructors applied while teaching in clinic, and the unique teaching challenges faced in a clinical setting while managing client care. Results: Results indicated a statistically significant difference (p <̲ .05) in clinical instructors' perceived self-efficacy in each of the three TSES subscales after implementation of the EB FDP. Statistical significance was found in each survey item as well, with the exception of the Efficacy in Clinical Management subscale where five of the eight survey items were found to have a statistically significant difference . In addition, comments Clinical instructors made during the two focus group sessions support the quantitative findings in this study. Conclusion: Evidence-based FDPs are viable methods to provide clinical instructors with teaching methodology to improve their self-efficacy and teaching strategies"--Leaf vi.
