PTSD - specific cannabis expectancies in college population veterans

<p>"Substance expectancies are beliefs about the expected outcome of use, and consumption will be done in way that delivers the effects expected. Expectancies of substances providing relief from symptoms of PTSD has been studied extensively, finding significant positive relationships between alcohol, benzodiazepine, and opioid use and PTSD symptomology. In particular, military veterans are using substances to self-medicate symptoms of PTSD, demonstrated in a study with Vietnam veterans where a relationship between alcohol use and PTSD symptomology was found. However, PTSD symptom specific cannabis expectancy research has not been explored. This study examined positive and negative cannabis expectancies in relation to severity of PTSD symptoms, and frequency of cannabis use in 492 college students and 29 student-veterans. Frequency of cannabis use, PTSD symptom severity, along with positive and negative cannabis expectancies were collected. Significant relationships were found between frequency of use, positive and negative cannabis expectancies, and severity of PTSD symptomology"--Leaf iv.</p>
