Free press, torture and the way forward: one journalist's story of reporting in Ethiopia's totalitarian regime

<p>"This is a qualitative, ethnographic case study of the life of Adera Tessaye', a prominent Ethiopian journalist who fled political persecution in Ethiopia in 2008 and was granted refugee status in the U.S. in 2012. The goal of this thesis is to tell the story of Tessaye's life and consider it in the context of theories of development communication, participatory action, and freedom of speech in East Africa. In telling Tessaye's dramatic story of reporting in the midst of a violent political regime, this thesis asks the reader to consider the dangers of pursuing Western ideas of freedom of speech in the threatening political climate of 21st century Ethiopia"--Document.</p>
