Using media to teach a biography of Lincoln and Douglass: a case study of teaching ESL listening & viewing in college composition

<p>"The goal of this multiple case study was to investigate the effectiveness of a guided listening comprehension activity for multilingual college freshmen. This classroom- based, action research was conducted winter quarter of 2013 at Eastern Washington University in a composition class for multilingual writers. The primary text was Freedman's Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass: The Story Behind an American Friendship, and the graduate instructor had written the curriculum in a master's class, Curriculum Design and Assessment, taught by the program director and the responsible investigator for this thesis. The instruments designed to collect data focused on mothers, since both Lincoln and Douglass lost their mothers at an early age. A total of 11 students participated in journal writing about their own mothers, 12 students participated in the broadcast cloze test about children's grief, and 12 students participated in the cloze test based on the poem about Nancy Hanks, Lincoln's mother. Students were all males from Saudi Arabia, Japan, China, Korea, and Spain. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were employed. Elements of critical ethnography as defined by Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), our international professional organization, were included to identify major and minor themes in the journals as recommended by Purcell- Gates (2004). Findings suggest that students need to do viewing and writing more often-possibly daily-to improve their listening comprehension skills"--Document.</p>
