Delinquency, Academic Underachievement, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: A Longitudinal Investigation of Developmental Sequencing and Interrelated Risk Factors

This study utilized a longitudinal sample of 503 boys to investigate the developmental sequencing of delinquency, AU, and ADHD, as they unfold over time. Age of onset analysis, followed by a within subjects analysis, was conducted. Common risk factors among delinquency, AU, and ADHD, including parent involvement, school bonding, and achievement motivation, were investigated utilizing the odds ratio and logistic regression. Median age of onset analysis uncovered the pathway of ADHD → AU → delinquency. Sequences of the pathway were also uncovered, and were found to occur at rates greater than chance. Lastly, the direction of the pathway was confirmed. Among the three risk factors, significant predictors of delinquency and AU were discovered. Implications of the pathway and significant risk factors are discussed.
