An analysis of the use of web-based instruction in the Physical Education and related Departments in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education

The use of web-based instruction (WBI) in Physical Education and related Departments in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PSSHE) was studied by analyzing computer use, obstacles to WBI, factors supporting WBI, degree of WBI implementation, WBI for Physical Education majors versus non-majors, and types of courses that utilize WBI. The data were collected via an instrument returned by 57 of 148 faculty members surveyed. Data analysis indicated the following: primary obstacles to WBI utilization were lack of time to prepare and lack of adequate training; the primary factors supporting WBI utilization were software and hardware resources. Data indicated over half of the respondents used WBI to some degree, and those who did not indicated their intention to utilize WBI in the future. Required courses for majors and non-majors utilized WBI more than elective courses. WBI was used most often for methods courses within the major. The amount of computer training received, gender, faculty rank, experience teaching in higher education, and highest earned degree had no significant relationship with the number of different course that have been taught utilizing WBI.
