It looks closely at African American families and community members being marginalized by urban public school settings. This work provides a clear analysis of causal explanation for institutional barriers and perceptions that exist in schools. This dissertation in practice contains a road map and suggestions for urban educational leaders who intend to improve the conditions of engagement between families, communities and school officials by removing negative barriers and perceptions that exist.
